Art Allergies

Health and safety are a concern for all art installations, even those that are installed in non-healthcare facilities. This wooden 17-foot tall $750,000 sculpture had to be removed from the FBI’s Miami field office because it was making the staff there sick.

If you are a sculptor in wood, it sure would help to know that Western red cedar can be a strong allergen. Otherwise, you’ll have a very costly mistake to deal with.

The artwork was moved to a government storage facility in Maryland, and the total bill for this fiasco has now exceeded $1.2 million. It’s unclear what will be done with the work long term.
